SPODE ICE PAIL & COVER, circa 1825. Of Campana form, with two scroll handles with moulded leaf terminals, the cover surmounted with a gilt pineapple finial, richly decorated with a cobalt blue ground, classical gilding, and finely painted landscape scenes, titled on the base “Warkworth Castle, Northumberland” and “Tremarton Castle, Cornwall”. Height: 33.7cm. Marked Spode. Provenance: The Copeland China Collection Trelissick House, Cornwall. Exhibited: Spode Bicentenary Exhibition, 1970, Spode Museum, no.335. Illustrated by Leonard Whiter, Spode (1970), pl. 192. Such impressive wares were designed for fashionable Regency dining, when iced desserts became a mark of refinement at elite tables.
