Description:

A PAIR OF REGENCY PERIOD BLACK & GILT TOLEWARE CHESTNUT URNS, Circa 1820

A fine pair of chestnut urns of japanned pewter, each urn featuring a removable lid with extruded leaf & urn finial top, fitted to a footed ovoid urn base, with opposing gilt lion's head ring pull handles, and a beautiful foliate design band around the circumference, a continuous leaf design around the bowl, repeated around the oval foot. Regency period chestnut urns are decorative, toleware (japanned metal) objects from the early 19th century, characterized by classical forms, black painted grounds, and gilded or hand-painted floral decoration. These urns, often featuring acorn or pointed finials and lion mask ring handles, were functional, serving as vessels for nuts, but primarily valued as decorative items for interiors.  Height: 12.5in.
